Community Day of Service Showcases Neighborhood Leaders

Students, neighbors and other volunteers teamed up last month for an inspiring Community Day of Service. On April 11, volunteers joined together to prepare several community gardens for the season, beautify a group of abandoned homes, and clean some streets to brighten the neighborhood. It was a cloudy and chilly spring day, but everyone persevered working until late that afternoon when we were greeted by sunshine just.

Ashbury Shops Get Fresh Look

Parts of Ashbury Avenue received a $45,000 makeover thanks to an Urban Development Action Grant received by the City of Cleveland. The city also spent $250,000 to repave the road from East 105th Sreet to Lakeview Road, the entire length of the street. Ward 9 Councilman Kevin Conwell took part in a ribbon cutting ceremony Nov. 19 upon completion of the project and also lives on Ashbury.

Fighting for Cleveland Homeowners

Homeowners, neighborhood leaders and the nonprofit group Empowering and Strengthening Ohio's People, better known as ESOP, launched a campaign urging federal officials, banks and mortage companies to save homes from foreclosure.  Community members delivered letters to bank branches across the Cleveland area asking bank CEOs to support their demand that  Ed DeMarco, acting director of Federal Housing Finance Agency, end his opposition to principal reduction. Cleveland Central Promise Neighborhood Connections Awards over $9,000 to Grassroots Groups in Central

In December, members from five grassroots groups received grants up to $3,000 each for their resident-led projects. The Sisters of Charity Foundation’s Cleveland Central Promise Neighborhood initiative and Neighborhood Connections partnered to create this new funding opportunity in Central to encourage involvement and leadership by neighbors in the Cleveland Central Promise Neighborhood Initiative. All projects must focus on the positive social development and academic success.

Glenville Pastor Calls for Community Outreach

Pastor Andrew Clark, Sr., of Trinity Outreach Ministries on Ashbury Avenue, announced in October a plan that encourages every church in Glenville to open its doors during the week for tutoring and workshops on financial literacy, crime prevention and health.   Clark, the founder of Glenville Ministry in Missions Alliance, announced the plan, dubbed the Recovery 7 Plan, at a meeting Oct. 27.
