Central Residents Groups Receive Grants

In March, seven grassroots groups received grants up to $3,000 each for their resident-led projects.  The Sisters of Charity Foundation’s Cleveland Central Promise Neighborhood initiative and Neighborhood Connections partnered to create this new funding opportunity in Central to encourage involvement and leadership by neighbors in the Cleveland Central Promise Neighborhood Initiative.  All projects focus on the positive social development and academic success of neighborhood youth..

Untouchable Boxing Academy Brings 4 Young Champs Home from Nationals

Four youths recently traveled from Cleveland to Independence, Missouri as boxing championship contenders. They returned home winners. From February 1 to 4 they fought in the 2012 National Silver Gloves Tournament, which is for 10 to 15 year old amateur boxers. Twon Billings: Former Gang Leader Serves Others

The Rainey Institute: Art, Energy & Community

  On a cold, wet winter evening last month, as the sun set and the streets darkened, there was a joyful noise on East 55th Street. About 27 young violin students started their daily practice at the Rainey Institute, an afterschool arts program. “Everybody up!” teacher Darnell Weaver said. He pointed to a series of dots written on the board. “We’re going to stomp our feet on the dots.”   Students, many dressed in school uniforms, hopped.

Central Youth Showcased Talent at Weekend Show

  Youth from the Central neighborhood set out to showcase their talent Saturday. With the help of the Central Promise Ambassadors, the children prepared their performances during three months of rehearsals and took to the stage at Cuyahoga Community College's Metro Campus to show parents and supporters what they could accomplish. The program consisted of dance numbers to current popular songs, children performing scenes from films as well.

$7 Children’s Concerts at Severance Hall
