A Pot O’ Gold at Friendly Inn Settlement

“Are leprechauns real?” a curious second-grader asked me as I strolled around the St. Patrick’s Day-themed Family Night at Friendly Inn Settlement on March 12. The holiday-themed event culminated the Healthy Kids, Healthy Communities program taught by Mallory Salvi, an AmeriCorps member at Children’s Hunger Alliance. The curriculum combines 12 hands-on nutrition education — or Food Folks — lessons, in conjunction with 20 hourlong moderate to vigorous physical.

Café Brings Healthy Food to Neighborhood

Friendly. Affordable. Healthy.   Racquel Jones, manager at Bridgeport Café here, wants this neighborhood to become known by those three words. Bridgeport, located in an area once deemed a food desert by the U.S. Department of Agriculture, offers friendly service and affordable, healthy food.   “We want to take the stereotype [of the Central neighborhood] away,” Jones said during an interview at the café last month. “That’s what we’re trying to do here. Carl Cook: A Servant at Maximum Service

“You have to be a servant at maximum service … you have to watch your motives when building a nonprofit. You have got to do this from the heart [and] not for monetary gain.” Wisdom almost spewed out of Carl Cook, the founder of Project Save, during our interview. I was intrigued at the words of wisdom that could only be derived from experience of the.

Central Arts Group Committed to Community

Foluke Cultural Arts Center, led by Dava Cansler, is a force to be reckoned with in the Central community. Cansler founded the center years ago as a dance faith-based ministry with a focus on the community. The organization expanded after Cansler conducted a survey in the community to see if the residents would be interested in an arts program. The results showed a hunger for an artistic outlet, Cansler said. “I saw the arts as.

As a member of the Innovation Team at Neighborhood Connections, I must say we go through rigorous training on the process of helping communities gain access to new ways of communication and empowerment.  We look at oppression and racism, privilege, and power and try to understand and eradicate a lack of equity in our local communities. We try to develop practices that encourage diverse cultures.

Local drill team encourages focus and precision

As I approached the church doors at Mt. Sinai Baptist Church on Woodland Avenue, I heard deep thunders of unified stomps and shattering claps responding to a voice of strength guiding the bodily music. I had no idea where I was going initially, however, I just followed the sounds of ancient times — stomps and claps. When I finally turned the corner into the room, there.

Does Your Silence Make You Guilty?

Did it ever occur to you that NOT saying something is just as bad or worse than saying the wrong thing? A friend of mine asked me this question. She said that she had a friend, or an associate, who was engaging in what she thought was inappropriate, though not necessarily illegal, behavior. My friend said she felt compelled to say something but, out of.
