Where Art & Community Intersect

Architect Mark Lakeman stood inside Trinity Cathedral last month and spoke like a preacher — bringing a message of hope and inspiration to a capacity crowd of about 160 Clevelanders who came to hear him speak. “Even though we are surrounded by so many disparaging stories, our hearts are still beating,” Lakeman said as he introduced the citizen-driven movement called City Repair that began in a Portland,.

Bottoms’ animation, "No-Ners: No Donors," beat out more than 900 other student submissions from almost 40.

Bessie Had the Blues

The Cleveland Play House has always brought the area great entertainment and sometimes rapid history lessons, as well. At the opening night of "The Devil's Music: The Life and Blues of Bessie Smith," I learned about a different type of establishment that was available in the 1920s. It was called a “buffet flat” and is the setting in which the famous singer is introduced. As Smith's story.

What If …

I attended the very first "Cleveland Talks," a storytelling event for Grown Ups!  This event was inspired and hosted by Itty Matthews, a Case Western Reserve University medical student I recently met. It was wonderful to hear people share their personal stories about "rebirth." The stories ranged from near death experiences, supernatural encounters, personal awakenings that resulted from hardship, and a remarkable recovery despite a terminal.

Central Arts Group Committed to Community

Foluke Cultural Arts Center, led by Dava Cansler, is a force to be reckoned with in the Central community. Cansler founded the center years ago as a dance faith-based ministry with a focus on the community. The organization expanded after Cansler conducted a survey in the community to see if the residents would be interested in an arts program. The results showed a hunger for an artistic outlet, Cansler said. “I saw the arts as.

Local drill team encourages focus and precision

As I approached the church doors at Mt. Sinai Baptist Church on Woodland Avenue, I heard deep thunders of unified stomps and shattering claps responding to a voice of strength guiding the bodily music. I had no idea where I was going initially, however, I just followed the sounds of ancient times — stomps and claps. When I finally turned the corner into the room, there.

Jan Thrope didn’t set out to write a photojournalism book about Cleveland’s city neighborhoods.  The process was jump-started when a boy she was tutoring was overcome by fear of his neighborhood. Movie About Teen Pregnancy Lacks Depth

I saw the film "17 Girls" at the Cleveland International Film Festival. The movie is based on a real-life group of best friends who decided to all get pregnant at the same time and raise their children together. It reminded me of the movie "The Pregnancy Pact," which was based on that exact same story and aired on Lifetime. I think the reason so many filmmakers have taken an interest in this story.
